Traditional Owners’ Vision

Listen to the Yolŋu Matha translation

In 2021 and with the support of the Reference Group, Traditional Owners of the Gove Peninsula released A New Journey Together: Traditional Owner Vision for the Future of Nhulunbuy and the Gove Peninsula.

The vision outlines the foundations for transition and 8 priority areas the Traditional Owners wish to see achieved for the Gove Peninsula beyond mining:

  • Recognition of Traditional Owners
  • Yolŋu and Ŋäpaki together
  • Connecting with culture and country
  • A diverse economy
  • Nhulunbuy as a services hub
  • Rejuvenating Nhulunbuy
  • Infrastructure ready for the future
  • Town, communities and homelands strong together

The vision makes clear Traditional Owners’ aspirations for a regional services hub in Nhulunbuy which supports Yolŋu and Ŋäpaki living and working together with a strong respect and knowledge of each other’s cultures, a diverse and thriving economy with opportunity for all, and a diversity of education opportunities and services to support the local population and broader East Arnhem region.

The Vision also sets out the foundations for all work conducted by the Reference Group within six distinct workstreams. Refer to Projects for more information on workstreams and associated projects.
