Gove Peninsula Mining Transition

The Gove Peninsula is entering a period of significant change with the closure of Rio Tinto's Gove Mine planned for the end of this decade. The cessation of mining and departure of Rio Tinto’s residential workforce will have impacts on local communities, businesses, government services and the broader Gove Peninsula, but also present new opportunities for the region.

The Gove Peninsula Futures Reference Group is working closely together to address key barriers and opportunities for the Gove Peninsula’s long-term socio-economic sustainability.

The Reference Group acknowledge Traditional Owners have articulated a clear and innovative direction for the future through A New Journey Together - Traditional Owners Vision for the Future of Nhulunbuy and the Gove Peninsula. PDF (2.1 MB)

The Traditional Owners’ Vision is significant as the land on the Gove Peninsula is granted Aboriginal Land that will be returned to Traditional Owners following Rio Tinto’s exit.

The Reference Group has committed to supporting Traditional Owners’ aspirations for a thriving and diverse economy and regional services hub where all residents can live and work together in a best practice example for the rest of Australia.
