Nhulunbuy Master Plan

The Nhulunbuy Master Plan is set for public release in 2025.

The Nhulunbuy Master Plan will be the primary road map to guide the redevelopment and renewal of Nhulunbuy’s built environment as it transitions away from its mining origins. It recognises that the township of Nhulunbuy was developed without consultation of the Yolŋu Traditional Owners, and translates their Vision into a compelling long-term strategic plan to enhance Nhulunbuy’s future liveability and cultural vitality, as well as its economy.

The Master Plan has been shaped by over 200 local stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, business people, service providers, community organisations and residents. There was impressive alignment between all cohorts regarding what people value about Nhulunbuy today and aspirations for the future of the town, including: better connection to the beach, strong Yolŋu culture, an active town centre, great tourism experiences, attractive public spaces, safety, walkability, and affordable housing.

The Master Plan will define future land use, infrastructure, built form, public spaces, development opportunities and the related benefits to local communities, to:

  • Feasibly improve the amenity and integration of the built environment over time in a way that reflects Nhulunbuy’s unique social, physical and cultural environment.
  • Support business proposals and applications for funding of various scales.
  • Inform future reviews of the Nhulunbuy Corporation Development Scheme and associated planning documents.
